Is Upma good for Diabetics
Upma is a traditional Indian dish prepared all over the country, Generally consumed as snack or for breakfast. Upma is prepared from Sooji ( semolina). Sooji itself is derived from wheat and high carbohydrate and calory content ( 75 gms of carbs per 100gms of semolina providing approx. 350 kcals of energy) single usual serving of upma is approx. 260 Kcals. But the biggest problems with foods made with semolina ( sooji) is their high glycemic index , such products are quickly absorbed into blood and result in quick and high peaks in blood glucose levels- this makes such foods undesirable for diabetics. Upma is often consumed with Nariyal chutney- which has high caloric value and is rich in saturated fats. Nariyal Chutney is therefore not recommended for diabetics.
One solution is making upma with soaked fenugreek seeds this decreases the absorption in blood and may prevent sudden blood glucose peaks. Here you can access this recipe for free.

Thanks for your advice on Suji. I take 1 teaspoon of soaked Fenugreek seeds, early in the morning, including drinking the Fenugreek water. Can non diabetics also take the above preparation on an empty stomach, is it a good thing to do.
Semolina is actually a low glycemic index food, 44 on the glycemic index.
My mom is a diabetic. Morning she consumes one chapati made of wheat flour and after two hours of consuming the chapati her sugar levels spike to 300. Please help me out to prepare a diet chart for her as she is also a pure vegetarian

I did lot of research recently as to how to control blood sugar levels
It's tough but let's understand
In Type 2 diabetes there are two reasons why we can not control our Sugar
1. Body is not producing enough insulin
2. Insulin resistance
Insulin resistance can be decreased by excercise and loosing weight
First of all you should know the reason of your Diabetes
Reason no 2
Most people have insulin resistance hence doctors prescribe Metformin. The role of metformin is to make sugar available to body cells from blood. Means sugar can enter your cells and level of sugar in blood comes down
Coming to reason number 1
Wen insulin is not produced in body ,patient is asked to take insulin
There are two types of insulin
1. Rapid acting that is cleared from body in approx 5 hours
2.Long acting insulin which works and stays in blood 24-26 hours
Both sorts of Insulins should be used for better control
If you have insulin resistance and also insulin dependent then you have to take both Insulin and Metformin combination

Try roti made from besan or gram flour. Glucose levels will not rise after consumption.
Also try giving her moong dosa. Soak akkha moong over night. Grind it with green chilli, garlic and very little salt if u want. Prepare it like dosa. It requires very very little oil if u hv a non stick pan. In fact I put little oil just for my first dosa. I eat that with lots of salads. It's fillingand healthy.
